Room 14 Tuis Chefs in Action

This term five students from our class have been chosen to attend the Waka Unua Cooking Course at what was the Phillipstown Technology Centre. They all have an interest in cooking. Our Transition Team, Jann and Jane, seek out courses and activities that tap into passions and special interests. Hopefully once our students leave school they will continue to develop skills in these areas.

Rawiri loves to cook. He is an enthusiastic helper. He made nachos this week. There was a lot of chopping, and Rawiri knows the knife is really sharp so he is always careful.

Matthew is new to cooking courses, so it is a big step up for him. He is giving it his best. His mum is an awesome cook. Soon he will be able to give her a hand in the kitchen.

Lulu helped at the table with Merit, James and Kyle. They are showing a lot of independence and are following instructions so well.

Merit puts so much care into her cooking. She is always really careful.

Kyle is inspecting his nachos. I wonder if he put the hot sauce on?

Mr James loves hot sauce! He let everyone choose whether they wanted to put some on. Here's Rawiri getting his baked beans. Mr James got his grater out ready to show everyone what to do next.

Rawiri listened carefully. Then he grated cheese to go on top of his nachos.

Matthew was really focused on the job too. We always say "Don't grate your fingers!"

Merit sprinkled cheese on top of her nachos before they went in the oven.

The most important part of the lesson is to listen carefully to Mr James when he is telling everyone what to do. He shows us at the same time.

We are really proud of our chefs. They have to be able to listen to and follow instructions, carry out cooking tasks like chopping, grating and mixing carefully and then they have to clean up really well afterwards. They also need to follow the strict hygiene standards of the kitchen. If they manage all of that they get to take some delicious food back to school. Some students choose to take it home, and others eat it for lunch.

We asked Mr James what he is planning for next week and he thinks it will be pizzas. Yum!
